For sleeping, low noise is the priority, look for models with sound levels no higher than 50 dB. Compressor ACs cool more effectively, but many are loud and vibrate. Evaporative coolers run almost silently, don't dry out the air, and work great in dry climates, in humid conditions, you can still use them as powerful refreshing fans with added humidity.

Running a compressor AC off a regular car battery is nearly impossible, the starting current is too high and will drain the battery quickly. Evaporative coolers are much better for this: many run on 12 volts or USB and can be powered from a cigarette lighter or a power bank. If you plan to sleep away from civilization, choose a low‑voltage model.

A built‑in roof AC is more powerful and takes up no floor space, but it costs more and requires professional installation. A portable unit can be taken on any trip and even used in a tent or car, but it will take up some floor space. For occasional hot trips, a portable option is more convenient and affordable.
