For sleeping, the most important things are quiet operation and smooth speed control so you don't get too cold by morning. Just place it next to your bed, fill it with cold water or ice, and you'll enjoy a pleasant fresh breeze all night long.

Expensive models offer what cheap ones don't: silent motors, stepless speed control, remote or smartphone control, and, in the case of evaporative coolers, actual air cooling. If you struggle to sleep in the heat, look specifically for an evaporative cooler with a night mode and an auto-off timer. A basic fan will just blow warm air around, while a good device creates real freshness.
