The best choice depends on your garage size, insulation, and climate. For an insulated garage, a compressor model with at least 12,000 BTU works well, while for an open or unsealed garage in a dry climate, a large evaporative cooler with high airflow is a better fit. Pay attention to models with rugged construction and washable filters, because garages are dustier than indoor rooms.

Technically, they are the same devices, but in a garage you need better resistance to dust, temperature swings, and often physical bumps. Compressor models should have a well-sealed case, while evaporative coolers need easily washable filters. Also keep in mind that any AC will struggle more if your garage isn't insulated.

In a garage, a cheap AC wears out faster due to dust, temperature swings, and infrequent maintenance. Within two or three seasons, the price difference gets eaten up by repairs and higher electricity bills. It's better to spend a bit more once on a model with good filtration and a durable case.
